Apparently I was a good boy in 2010 and Santa felt that he would surprise me with some new glass instead of the usual lump of coal. The following is a review of my new lens: the Canon 24-105L f/4 IS.

I had been eyeing some new glass for a little while now and had been doing a lot of web research, looking into what lens better suits my style and my particular uses. I wanted to go "L series" because I have used a few of them before and was always impressed with the sharpness and contrast produced in the photos. Also these lenses are weather sealed... a big perk in my eyes.

I had narrowed it down to the 24-70L f/2.8 and the 24-105L f/4.0 IS. Aside from focal length and f stops, the later choice is equipped with Canon's IS system, or image stabilization. I decided upon the 24-105 because I wanted a more "all around" lens, and despite the lower f stops the IS system is supposed to compensate for the f/4 in lower light. It should be noted that the 24-105 is also considerably lighter in weight than the 24-70, something to be considered if it will be hanging from your neck for hours at a time.

Below are a few shots I have compiled in the past week. I haven't really had a chance to go out and shoot anything per say, because the weather has been so terribly cold and I really don't want to be outside for any extended period of time.

Feel free to give me any feedback/comments or critiquing on the photos.

So far, I am very impressed with the lens. The above photos were not altered in any way with any kind of post processing, other than cropping. The lens is definitely very sharp and the contrast are amazing. I am very impressed with the colour reproduction and the bokeh as well. (all the photos were taken with the "auto" white balance setting.) I have had a couple situations already where I have thought I could have used the 2.8 aperture on the 24-70 but on the other hand I am not willing to give up the IS, it is a definite trade-off for sure. The 24-105 is a little softer in the corners at full reach but it's something I can live with. On one occasion I did wish it was a little wider at the low end, but considering I have an APS-C sensor with a 1.6x magnification factor, this wouldn't be an issue with a full frame camera. (next year...) Overall, I am delighted by the performance of this lens for my intended purposes. To me, the only thing better would be a 24-105L f/2.8 IS.
